Turn Laptop Specs Into a Useful Public Comparison Table

Structure laptop specs by configuration, normalize units, preserve source notes, and publish a comparison table readers can filter and verify.

To publish a useful laptop specs table, make each row one configuration—not just one model name. Keep capacities numeric, distinguish manufacturer claims from measurements, and attach a source and verification date to every row.

The result should let readers filter for a requirement, such as at least 16GB of memory, without mistaking an optional upgrade for an included component. This is a dataset-building workflow, not a ranking of laptops to buy.

Define what one row represents

A product-family specification page may list several processors, screens and storage options. Combining its maximum values into one row can describe a configuration you have not verified exists.

For example, Apple’s 2025 13-inch M4 MacBook Air specifications list 8-core and 10-core GPU options, 16GB memory configurable to 24GB or 32GB, and a 256GB SSD configurable to larger capacities. Those options should not become one undifferentiated “MacBook Air” record.

Use a manufacturer part number or configuration identifier where available. Otherwise, assign an editorial ID and spell out the selected components. If you only have family-level information, label it as such and keep it separate from configuration-level records.

Use columns that support comparison

Start with this schema. Add fields only when they serve the table’s purpose.

Field or field group What to record Cleaning rule
record_id, model, generation, configuration_id Stable identity and selected variant Do not merge generations under one model name
cpu_model, gpu_model Exact component names Avoid broad labels such as “i7”
memory_gb, memory_type, memory_upgradeability Installed capacity, type and upgrade status Separate installed memory from a supported maximum
storage_gb, storage_type Selected drive capacity and technology Declare how TB values are converted
screen_diagonal_in, screen_width_px, screen_height_px Screen size and native resolution Keep dimensions in separate numeric columns
battery_wh Battery energy capacity Do not treat it as runtime
battery_claim_hours, battery_test, battery_claim_type Runtime claim and its method Preserve “up to” and test conditions
weight_kg, weight_basis Weight and its qualification Distinguish listed, starting and measured weight
ports_notes Counts, standards and supported functions Keep qualifications, not just connector shapes
source_url, verified_on, notes Evidence and exceptions Use an ISO date such as 2026-10-09

For storage listed in decimal units, convert 1TB to 1,000GB—not 1,024GB. Apple defines its storage GB as one billion bytes and TB as one trillion bytes, and notes that formatted capacity is less. Record advertised capacity consistently rather than mixing it with usable capacity. Apple’s storage definition.

If prices matter, add amount, currency, market, seller and observation date as separate fields. Do not put prices from different currencies into one sortable amount column.

Use blanks for unknown numeric values, with an explanation in notes; zero means zero, not “not found.” For categorical fields, distinguish unknown from not_supported.

A small, sourced example

This CSV is an illustrative extract of manufacturer-listed specifications, not a tested device or a current availability claim. It represents the listed 16GB/256GB, 8-core-GPU configuration of the 2025 model. Apple reports a 13.6-inch screen, 2560 × 1664 resolution, a 53.8Wh battery and 1.24kg weight, with a qualification that weight varies by configuration and manufacturing process. Before publication, add the source URL and configuration note to the file itself. A citation in accompanying prose should not be the only provenance available to someone who downloads the data.

Keep claims comparable

Do not combine different battery tests into one runtime ranking. Apple lists up to 18 hours of video streaming and up to 15 hours of wireless web use for that model, with testing conditions in its footnotes. These are separate claims, not interchangeable observations. Apple’s battery test notes specify the tested configuration and settings.

Likewise, Lenovo’s ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 10 specification document, dated December 21, 2023, gives different runtimes for MobileMark, JEITA and local video playback. It also labels weight as “starting at” and memory as soldered and not upgradable. Preserve those qualifications rather than reducing every field to an unqualified number.

If you retain multiple battery claims for a configuration, put them in a separate table keyed to record_id, with one row per test. This keeps the main specs table at one row per configuration.

If you include benchmark results, use a separate results table keyed to the configuration, with benchmark name, version, settings and test source. Keep manufacturer specifications and observed performance distinct.

Export, publish and check

Prepare a publication-only sheet with one header row, no merged cells, consistent units and no subtotals mixed into device records. Remove serial numbers, asset tags, employee names and other private inventory information.

As checked on October 9, 2026, TablePage accepts CSV, TSV, XLSX and XLS uploads and generates a public dataset page with a shareable link and filterable table. Upload only information intended for public access.

Check the published page before sharing:

  • Confirm memory and storage values behave as numbers, not text.
  • Verify that configuration notes and source links remain readable.
  • Check that unknown values are not presented as zero.
  • State the dataset’s coverage, units, missing-value convention and verification date in its accompanying description.

For wording that makes the table’s scope clear, use the guidance on data table captions and summaries. A filtered result should identify records that meet documented specifications—not imply that those laptops have equivalent performance.
