How to check a package against the recall

Check the printed package label in this order:

  1. Match the exact UPC. Every digit must agree, including leading zeros.
  2. Match the package size. A similar name in a different size is not automatically included.
  3. Match the “Best If Used By” date. Compare it with the date range for that specific UPC.
  4. Use the retailer and distribution territory as corroborating context. They can help confirm a match but should not override matching package identifiers.

For example, the Trader Joe’s row identifies Fiesta Style Salad Shrimp, size 11.11 oz, UPC 000000818377, with a “Best If Used By” date from August 7 through August 12, 2026. The source lists Texas as its distribution territory.

A retailer’s appearance in the notice does not mean every jalapeño product sold by that retailer was recalled. Likewise, a state listing describes the reported retail distribution territory; it does not establish that the product reached every store in that state.

Do not use your present location as a decisive test. A product could have been purchased while traveling or moved outside its listed distribution area. If the UPC, size, and date match but the location does not, avoid consuming the item until Taylor Fresh Foods or the retailer confirms its status.

FDA advises anyone who believes they developed symptoms after eating a dish containing recalled jalapeños to contact a healthcare provider. Reported symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, and illness usually begins 12–72 hours after exposure, according to the FDA outbreak advisory.

That advice concerns recalled jalapeños and products made with them; it is not a warning against jalapeños generally.

Why the products were recalled—and what the outbreak totals mean

Taylor Fresh Foods initiated the recall after Coast Citrus Distributors recalled fresh jalapeños because of potential Salmonella contamination. The notice does not say that every finished Taylor product tested positive.

Taylor said on August 9, 2026, that it was not aware of illnesses linked specifically to its products containing the recalled jalapeños. That was a dated company statement, not a conclusion that illnesses could never be reported later.

Broader outbreak context—not Taylor-specific

As of August 21, 2026, FDA reported 431 illnesses, 57 hospitalizations, and no deaths across 32 states in the broader Salmonella Javiana outbreak associated with jalapeños.
